The name HILL CLIMBER occurred to Robert Biale Vineyards years ago as they began to develop farming contracts with top viticulturalists who were targeting Syrah for these rugged and hilly sites. It was painfully obvious as they trudged up one hill after another that there was a theme taking shape – the vineyard projects involved working with vineyards planted on steep slopes involving intensive hand-farming, thus, the name HILL CLIMBER. It is a reflection of the daily arduous work that happens in the vineyard in order to produce a great Syrah from the ground up.
HILL CLIMBER’s mission into the mountains has yielded our first Napa Syrah/Rhone blend - the 2002 Hill Climber Pilgrimage. It is a carefully constructed blend of Robert Biales best Rhone-based fruit grown in Napa Valley: Stagecoach (above Oakville), Rolly Akers (Oak Knoll District), Thomann Station (St. Helena) and Priest Ranch (near Chiles Valley).
With short aeration, the 2002 Hill Climber Pilgrimage Syrah is a multifaceted stalwart and shows vibrant and estery classic Syrah tones of briary red fruit, currant liqueur, lamb fat, stone, and grilled bread. In the mouth, the deep and lush Syrah fruit is expansive and persistent, with a finish that echoes the Napa mountain Syrah flavors. The solid structure, soft tannins and vivid fruit make for a Syrah for immediate drinking or long term cellaring.
