The 2002 Ehlers Estate Napa Valley "1886" Cabernet Sauvignon is the hallmark of the Elhers Estate, the deep garnet hue once again identifies the origins of this wine. Concentrated aromas of rose petal, mineral and crushed berries lead into mid-palate flavors of dense cocoa, currant, earth and caramel. The finish is long with lingering flavors of tobacco and leather.

The 2002 growing season began with an April frost and some May showers. However, by July, growing conditions were truly ideal with warm days and cool, even cold, nights. September brought unseasonably warm weather with a noticeable lack of evening fog and our harvest was quickly compressed into the last two weeks of the month. Low yields and a cool growing season allowed for fully mature, ripe, rich fruit.

Winemaking: 70% of the fruit was fermented as whole berries after an initial cold soak of 3-4 days. The juice was inoculated with D-254 yeast and fed with organic nitrogen every 48 hours. Fermentation temperatures remained steady between 70-75°F with one spike to 84°F at mid-fermentation. The fermenting juice remained in contact with the skins until dry afterwhich a light pressing at 1.1 bar was followed by malo-lactic fermentation in the barrel.

Ehlers Estate is held in trust for the Leducq Foundation. Established by winery founders Jean and Sylviane Leducq, the Foundation funds international cardiovascular research. Proceeds from the sale of Ehlers Estate wines are returned to the Foundation as a resource for its philanthropic activities.
