The wines of Trefethen Vineyards are a reflection of the land from which they are grown. There is a synergy between the soil they work, the grapes they grow, and the wine they make. The craft of winegrowing is both ancient and modern. The relationship is intimate and has been carefully balanced at Trefethen Vineyards, encouraging creation of distinctive and exceptional family of world-class wines.
Trefethen Vineyards nestles into a landscape of vineyards more than a mile square at the cooler, southern end of the Napa Valley. Known as the Oak Knoll District it is one of the rare places in the Valley that is warm enough to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot without being too warm for Chardonnay. The marine influence is strong in Oak Knoll giving cooler temperatures and higher humidity than the rest of Napa Valley. These climactic characteristics are essential for preserving aromatics in the grapes and wine.
The historic winery was built in 1886. The Trefethen family purchased the old wooden winery and its vineyards 1968 to create the modern-day Trefethen Vineyards. With 600 acres on the valley floor and another 50 acres of vineyard in the nearby foothills, Trefethen is uniquely blessed from a viticultural perspective. The family owns all their vineyards enabling them to be one of the few truly estate grown wineries in the Napa Valley.
