Paul Hobbs Wines

Paul Hobbs comes from a family of 13: two parents, two girls and nine boys. This is why Paul Hobbs puts his first as well as his last name on his labels. His drive towards individual expression, which he was forced to develop at an early age, also shows up elsewhere on his labels. Reading down, varietal, and then something much rarer: the vineyard designation.

Paul Hobbs is one of the few winemakers making single-vineyard wines. He considers it an irresistible challenge. It exemplifies everything that attracted him to winemaking in the first place. His love to take the grapes from a particular site and let them show him different possibilities in the varietal, to make a wine in which the subtleties of the individual vineyard come through - a wine, you might say, with both a first and last name.

Each Paul Hobbs wine is fermented with the natural range of native yeasts found in the vineyard. Paul Hobbs does not pile on the oak and malolactic fermentation. He doesn't make huge butterbombs. Instead, he achieves a careful balance - in which high notes sparkle but nothing is overdone and nothing is lost - that gives Paul Hobbs wines a definite family resemblance.

Paul Hobbs Argentina

Following his successes in California, Paul Hobbs expanded into the Southern Hemisphere in 1998. The husband and wife team of Luis Barraud (wine maker) and Andrea Marchiori (viticulturist) helped Paul Hobbs setup Paul Hobbs Argentina in the Mendoza region.

The group of vines from the Marchiori Vineyard's youngest vines are called Nativo, or the natives. These wines show off the fresh, young fruit qualities of the wines. The mythical beats that adorn each bottle were inspired by the folk-art of the indigenous people who lived along the foothills of the Argentine Anes, over a thousand years ago. El Felino adorns the Malbec, Cocodrilo the Cabernet, and LaGarto the Merlot.
